Battery family hub

Household battery sizes

This hub covers alkaline AA, AAA, C, D and 9 V records. It does not merge rechargeable or lithium products that share a physical format.

Size is only the first field

AA and AAA describe form factors; LR6 and LR03 identify the alkaline families represented here. A rechargeable cell can share the envelope while requiring a different charger and voltage assessment.

9 V is rectangular

The 6LR61 record uses a rectangular envelope and snap terminals, so its dimensional presentation differs from cylindrical AA through D.

Cylindrical size progression

AAA/LR03 is 10.5 × 44.5 mm, AA/LR6 is 14.5 × 50.5 mm, C/LR14 is 26.2 × 50 mm and D/LR20 is 34.2 × 61.5 mm in the current records. The similar height of AA and C does not offset their very different diameters.

The 9 V/6LR61 family is rectangular with snap terminals and therefore uses an envelope rather than the round-cell profile.

Format does not define chemistry

AA, AAA, C and D are familiar physical names. The records on this hub specifically describe alkaline LR chemistry at 1.5 V nominal. Rechargeable and primary lithium versions can share a format while requiring different electrical and charging decisions.

Applications and capacity

A flashlight, controller, alarm or toy may appear as a common application, but only the device marking or manual establishes the required size and chemistry. Capacity and runtime vary with product, load, temperature and cut-off voltage, so the hub does not publish one family-wide promise.
