Nominal is not constant
A nominal value is a useful family label, not a promise that the terminal voltage remains fixed under every load and temperature. The discharge curve is part of why a same-size alkaline and silver-oxide cell may behave differently in a device.
The supported records show common primary-cell families: 1.5 V alkaline, 1.55 V silver oxide, 1.4 V zinc-air and 3 V lithium manganese dioxide.
Chemistry must remain visible
A compatibility result that lists only dimensions hides the most important distinction. Battery Codebook therefore prints chemistry and nominal voltage beside every verdict and keeps primary cells explicitly marked non-rechargeable.
- Never recharge a primary LR, SR, CR or PR cell.
- Do not infer chemistry from size or colour alone.
- Do not assume close nominal voltages produce identical service.
Four primary systems in the current scope
The supported alkaline button and household records are labelled 1.5 V nominal. Silver-oxide watch records are 1.55 V nominal. Zinc-air hearing-aid records are 1.4 V nominal, and lithium manganese-dioxide CR coin records are 3 V nominal.
These labels make broad differences visible; they do not replace product discharge curves or device limits.
Close voltages can still be different
The 0.05 V nominal gap between an LR and SR same-size pair may look small. Chemistry and discharge behaviour remain different, so the comparison stays conditional. Zinc-air introduces activation behaviour as well as a different nominal value.
Primary versus rechargeable
All canonical records in the present dataset are primary and explicitly marked non-rechargeable. A rechargeable AA-format product is not folded into the AA/LR6 alkaline record, because sharing the physical size would hide voltage and charging-system requirements.
Use only the charger specified for a rechargeable chemistry and never attempt to recharge a primary LR, SR, CR or PR cell.
Electrical checklist
Identify the chemistry from the complete designation or current product sheet, then record nominal voltage and primary/rechargeable status. Look for device limits or a specified cell code rather than deciding from voltage alone. Where a same-size alternative has another chemistry, describe the discharge-profile difference and keep the verdict conditional.
