A battery marking is a compact technical label, not merely a shop name. Read the complete code before considering an equivalent: its letters identify a chemistry and format, while its digits usually identify a nominal size.
Start with the letters
In the families covered here, L marks an alkaline electrochemical system, S marks silver oxide, P marks zinc-air and C marks lithium manganese dioxide. The following R describes a round cell. That is why LR44, the SR44 pair and PR44 can share the “44” size family while remaining chemically different.
Manufacturer numbers such as 377, 364 or A76 are aliases used in particular product ranges. Battery Codebook resolves them to one canonical family record, but it does not infer that similarly shaped codes are interchangeable.
Read the dimensions, then verify them
For CR coin cells, the four digits are especially readable: CR2032 is nominally 20 mm in diameter and 3.2 mm high; CR2025 is 20 mm by 2.5 mm. Button-cell numbering is less intuitive, so the current manufacturer dimension row remains the controlling source.
Resolve the full printed marking.
Check diameter and height against the source.
Check nominal voltage and chemistry.
For watch cells, preserve any W or SW suffix.
Why aliases do not get separate pages
LR44, A76 and AG13 are surfaced together because the supported sources map them into one alkaline family. Creating a separate factual page for each spelling would duplicate the same answer and make corrections inconsistent.
An alias match answers identity only. The next decision—whether another family can replace it—requires the comparison rules.
Worked example: LR44, A76 and the SR44 pair
A76 and LR44 map into one alkaline family. SR44SW/303 and SR44W/357 are not added to that alias list: both use silver-oxide chemistry and a different nominal voltage, and the manufacturer table also preserves separate low- and higher-drain classes.
This is the distinction between identity and compatibility. Alias resolution asks whether two labels name one record. Compatibility asks whether two different records can serve the same device, and the answer may be conditional.
Worked example: 377 and 376
The Murata selection guide maps 377 to SR626SW and 376 to SR626W. Both are 6.8 × 2.6 mm silver-oxide cells, but the suffixes preserve low- and higher-drain selection. Removing the suffix would lose information that the source deliberately maintains.
Markings this guide does not guess
A partial, damaged or retailer-created code is not automatically expanded. Use the finder for supported aliases or measure the cell to obtain candidates. If neither route produces a supported record, the honest result is “unsupported”, not a fabricated near-match.
Terminal tags, solder tabs and custom battery assemblies also require product-specific drawings; the bare-cell code is not enough to approve an assembly.
Code-reading checklist
Write down the full marking exactly as printed, including chemistry letters and any W/SW suffix. Resolve a supported maker number through a current cross-reference, then confirm the canonical record’s diameter, height, voltage and chemistry. If another code appears in the same shop listing, compare it as a separate family unless the primary source explicitly treats it as an alias.
Do not discard letters.
Do not turn a near-looking number into an alias.
Do not infer device approval from a cross-reference.
Keep the source and checked date beside the result.
